Overview

I offer tutoring services in three main areas: reading, math, and writing, and can tailor any one of these areas to a student’s needs.

Reading Program Overview

I approach reading instruction from a reading research perspective. There are 5 components essential to teaching children to read.

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary development
  • Reading fluency, including oral reading skills
  • Reading comprehension strategies

Various methods are used to increase the students abilities in each of these areas, beginning with an informal assessment to determine the student’s level. Included in this program is multi-sensory spelling which focuses on phonics and improves fluency.

In working with older students I will also provide instruction in how to read and study textbooks from school where appropriate.

Math Program Overview

My math program consists of two strands—Math Computation and Problem Solving.

Math Computation

The student will become proficient in the basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as appropriate for his/her grade level. This will be accomplished by practice both with the tutor and at home. Extension of these skills will be taught first using manipulatives, then pictorial application and finally abstract application.

Problem Solving

The student will learn the steps for problem solving and various problem solving strategies.
